Young aviators at Sywell

31st August 2006

On 9th September we will be having a Young Aviators event here at Sywell.

Many of the senior pilots of today whether airline pilots or military, started in their careers by hanging around airfields and aircraft hangars, helping out moving aircraft and generally getting infected by the aviation bug.

Sadly in today's high tech environment, youngsters seem to get all of their fun and enthusiasm from TV, computers and computer games.

Also in these security conscious times, opportunities to get up close and personal with aircraft and flying are limited to holiday trips once or twice a year.

With this in mind the Young Aviators initiative was established to provide young people (aged between 8 and 18) with a motivational aviation experience in the form of an air experience flight in a light aircraft.

We hope to grow public awareness and appreciation of light aviation and who knows, help to create the aviators of tomorrow.

We already have a shortlist of approximately 10 pilots with aircraft having two or more passenger seats willing to donate their time and flight costs for the event.

We are aiming at getting 50 or so children airborne on the day. The children will be coming from local schools and youth organisations in the Dunstable, Milton Keynes and Northampton region. They will doubtless be accompanied by parents/friends keen to see them take to the skies.

Each Young Aviator flown receives a certificate, and their name is entered in a special logbook, along with their aircraft and pilot's details. The flight is free for youngsters between 8 and 18 years old. When they leave every Young Aviator will get a goody bag full of items of aviation interest.

The whole event will be coordinated and operated under the auspices of the Popular Flying Association Sywell Branch and is supported by Sywell Aerodrome and Milton Keynes Aviation Society.
